I have a 91' 3GT SL with auto trans, and for the past couple weeks I have noticed somewhat of a grinding noise (Sounds like rubbing 2 metal discs together)
.The noise occurs very briefly just after I start the engine(spit second after). I only notice this on cold starts. The noise ALSO occurs just after I start to take off from a stop(it occurs a little louder in this situation).. this seems to be worse when i'm turning at the same time and also it goes away after is been drove for a while (like 20 min. or so). Now from what i know, the starter would explain when the engine starts, and the CV boots would explain the other noise situation when taking off. Any ideas??? I'm just wanting to get to the bottom of this noise cuz it is driving me crazy. So any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated! |

If turning the A/C on eliminates the noise, then the A/C compressor clutch may need to be reshimed or replaced.

Can't help but suspect the accessory belts (AC/PS) check them for tension & wear... I don't know that's what i got from your description... If all else fails post a video with the sound...
best of luck

and somewhat of an update.. the grinding noise is related to rpm. noise occurs when i am in gear and give it a just a little gas. Could this possibly be a pulley vibration? |

Here's a little trick i tried once and it worked:
It's gonna sound weird but it worked for me; It's up to you if you wanna try it. Do a cold start, and while the noise is audible, poor some clean water onto your serpentine belts. If they're the culprits, the noise should stop completely, and immediately, but only for a short while as the wetting allows the belts to find some grip on the pulleys (like when you wet your finger tips to flip a slippery page in a book). Make sure you don't go hosing down your engine bay when you do this, a few milliliters will do just fine, as long as it creates a thin film of water on the surface of the belts in contact with the pulleys. From your description, i'm leaning towards the power steering belt. Anyways, hope this helps, If the water does nothing, i don't know what else it may be... maybe a pulley like you said... cheers |

ok thanx for the interesting tip! The only problem with that is the noise only occurs for a split second after i start her. and as for the video/audio, if i do that, it'll take be probably a day or so to get a hold of a camera to use (from a friend). So Wednesday night, ill maybe get a video posted for help. |
