if i had as much money as nelson...gear vendors would already be offering an over/underdrive for our atx. an 8-speed AWD ATX in a 3/s is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow; imho. until that happens...it's my desire to push the ATX in my car--(with brute force $$$ if necessary) until i am happy with how i have it set. if that means that MICROSCOPIC sized atx-loving 3/s community finally benefits from my trailblazing...then so be it.

i have had it up to here with the idea that sedans are supposed to be ATX, and coupes are supposed to be MTX.
I really wonder if you are on crack by the way you post sometimes. Where are you going to put an overdrive unit on a FWD based platform? Seriously show me how you can run one and still have the front axles work.

Nice, I didn't know that.

What I am saying though is stock.

Stock autos are not built for speed, they are not built to speed shift or even race. Manuals can do whatever the driver in the seat is capable of though.

Not just with our cars but with DSM's you will find that autos only MATCH what a decent driver is capable of and by decent I mean better than average. They do not however beat the times and E.T's set by the best drivers. All the records are held by manuals and since its a variant of the 1g DSM auto tranny you can look at the 1g DSM autos and compare the times and E.T's to the 1G manuals.

Thats stock to stock and modified to modified. I agree with you though. If I were building a drag car just for simplicity and the ability to duplicate my runs without much driver input, both you and I would want a auto. With that I wouldn't rule out a manual though. A auto has no advantage over a manual with a studderbox and a great driver, though it would have a disadvantage in drivetrain loss.

Now if we had a 5 or 6 speed auto with paddle shifters, launch control, and a sport mode that could shift gears in a a 1/10th of a second that would be interesting but we don't.

no, but we can get our auto to manually shift. ipt sells that kit.

overdrive? yes, it wouldn't really fit. but i'm sure that SOMETHING could be modified to use an ATX with more gears. you really only need 1 more planetary gearset to add 2 more speeds (or 3, depending on how your work it). i'd even settle for a CVT. considering newer cars like the fusion come with a FWD 6-speed auto, it really doesn't seem like this should be rocket science.

hell if i REALLY had serious $$$, i'd figure a way to splice an AMG 4-matic, 7-speed directly onto a 6g74 powerplant.

daimler really shouldn't have ever messed with chrysler--they should have just bought mitsubishi.

prove me wrong!

a custom bell-housing = fit any tranny to any engine. it's funding and ambition which keeps it from happening.

don't just post here to rag on me, without some better info.

if these cars were RWD, then i'd simply swap the rear end out for a ratio that matched what i wanted the car to do. in an AWD it's not nearly as simple, so it makes a lot more sense to add gearing changes/additional gears to the tranny--than it does to change all 3 differentials (unless you can demonstrate how that's flawed logic).

if nothing else, the engine could be mounted longitudinally (yes, highly work-intensive), and then even MORE tranny options become available; yes, even the 4-matic.

Very few cars would have the same layout as our engine/trans and also have transmission that are dimensionally compatible as well as gear ratio compatible.

Basically there is zero chance you are going to do this and keep the AWD. Of course you can make the car RWD and run anything you want, that is proven.

You sound like a kiddie doing an engine swap in Forza and thinking it is just as easy in real life.

Believe me, if there was another transmission that could be fabbed up to work someone would be running it by now.

I can put wheels on my house and drive it down the road if I have enough time and money, but what the hell is the point about spouting out bullshit drivetrain swaps in every other thread when there is no way it is happening.

It is just as stupid as the car who wanted to swap our drivetrain in a Crossfire.

BTW, it is impossible to prove a negative.. I.e. you cannot prove that something absolutely cannot be done. Just like you cannot prove 100% there aren't any aliens in space because you cannot explore all space.

It is up to you to prove it can be done. I can't prove it can't be done because it is impossible to try and fit every transmission ever built so far as well as try to fit every transmission that will be built in the future.

fair enough. it's rather stupid arguing like this anyways.

perhaps the future will hold some better transmission that can be used in our transverse AWD application. i'll just have to get by on the 4-speed till then.
