Default how much shaft play is to much.

Alright I am going to be putting together a car comming up with turbos of really unknown quality. The front one is off and you can pull and push it the shaft to make a clunk noise. I just want to put the car together and start it up and if no noises drive it a little to see what problems the car has. So how much shaft play is to much to even try?

Coop, how long has it been since oil has been run through the turbo? Sometimes when theyre dry they have quite a bit of shaft play. If you add some oil into the oil feed and spin the compressor wheel, it should tighten up if that's the problem.

That's more shaft play than any turbo I have had. Man, that sounds awful.

Definitely check that out. Also, you would likely see scrape marks inside the compressor housing if it had a ton of shaft play.

Rebuild dammit. The shaft has literally 1/3" of play in all directions, a lil oil will not cure that. Quit being a dumbass and rebuild it, fuck. Quit cutting corners.

I just want to do what I said in the first post. Anyone see a problem with that like the fins will come off, shoot into the engine, and ruin it?

Coop, you cut that MAJOR corner, it breaks in 10 miles, you now have to spend your time removing the turbos and rebuilding them anyway while praying that nothing else was damaged in the carnage. Just do it right the first time bro.
