Arrow help..reading the codes...

car : 1994 mitsu 3000gt SL

the car threw a CEL..so to check the problem..would it be the same as like lets say nissan 300zx?

cus in my 300zx that i had..i just had to count the light blinking and then see what it was from the forum..

would it be the same for my 94 sl? do i just have to observe the light blinking on the dash and thats it?or I need to have the OBDII scanning tool?

could someone confirm something for me off the site given above by stealthee please..

on that it says :

• Step 6 - Find the right-most pin in the second row.

• Step 7 - Now, with the paperclip grounded via the wire take the straight end and slid it gently inside the harness in the 12th pin slot (right-most & closest to the firewall)

ok so what i want to confirm is that it says that to find pin # 1 and 12..put 1 end in #1 and the other in 12th pin then turn the ign to ON..and count the light blinking on check engine?

thanks

It doesnt say to find pin #1. The right most pin is the one you need.

I've been reluctant to jump in on this since I'm not that familiar with anything but the OBD I system but I'm a bit confused as well.
According to the write up on Jeff Lucius' site:
Stealth 316 - Reading Diagnostic Codes - 1991-1993 3S models

Quote:
According to the service manual, the codes can be read by grounding terminal 1, turning the ignition on (do not start the engine), and observing the pattern of flashes of the check engine (CE) light on the dash.
This other post says to ground pin 12. I'm not sure which is right. I thought pin 12 was ground, in which case you'd want to jumper pin 1 to pin 12 and count the flashes. I also thought, but like I said I'm not that up on it, that this was the same 16 pin connector as the OBDII in which case pin 12 would not be on the end but somewhere in the middle of the second row?

As far as "reading from pins 1 & 12, I think that's a cut-n-paste from the original procedure for OBD 1, were you connect a meter to pins 1 and 12 and watch the needle move. That's in the paragraph that lists the codes, which appear to be the same.

Sorry to butt in on something I don't know much about but FWIW I can see why VR is getting confused..

94 is not OBD1 though.

It states find the right most pin in the second row. Step 6 is kind of redundant.

Oh, I know it's not OBD I. That's why I freely admit I don't know that much about it.
What's got me stuck though is that the only way the right most pin on the bottom row could be pin 12 is if it's a 12 pin connector. What could make sense is if the connector is mounted upside down, in that case the right most pin on the bottom row would be pin 1 (instead of pin 1 being the top left it would be the bottom right). That would agree with what Jeff has on his site, but would make the whole pin 12 thing a typo.

I'll tell you what though, Stealthee's usually right and he does have a '94 so if he says ground the rightmost pin on the bottom I'd do it and be happy...

The connector on 94 and 95 looks just like an OBD2 connector.

It is the rightmost pin on the bottom that you need to ground.

In other words when you are hanging upside down under your dash its the pin closest to the firewall and closest to the console.
