It's looking more and more like that's the route I need to take, but I want to hold off just a little while see if I can figure this out before doing something major like that.

The noise is in sync with cam timing... If it was bottom end related, it would be every other rotation of the cam gear instead.

....Pull the covers, spin it over, and watch the valves, see if any of them are popping.

Valve covers are off and I watched each valve to see if it was sticking and popping up. That's kind of what the sound reminds me of...a valve getting stuck and then popping up and hitting the aluminum head. Even looked down the intake runners with an LED to see if I could see anything there, but it all looks normal.

so all ur rocker arms and lifters are in check.

I had this problem couple of months back. My problem was different i think. I am rocker arm on number 6 was thrown off the valve and lifter. That cylinder did not have any compression though.

I'll take one more look and wiggle each rocker arm, but they look solid.

Could a collapsed lifter be causing this?

Its possible. I am not really a expert so I cant tell u for sure. See the rocker arm that was thrown off was on the intake valve so that valve wasnt moving at all. Hence, 0 compression. In your case, you have compression so both valves are closing.

The rockers are all seated and fine. I need to wait for one of my room mates to return so I can take a look at the exhaust valves to see if any are sticking. If they aren't, then I dunno what the heck is wrong, but I'll most likely have to pull the head...should make for a nice weekend project.

Press on the top of the lifters. See if any of them compress easily, or are lower than the others. Or higher for that matter.

Notice anything strange in the cam lobes? Scoring on the valve stems?

I'll try that in the morning and post results. Cam lobes all look clean and no marks or scoring on any of them. I had my room mate crank the car over for about 2 minutes straight (about killing my optima battery, too) and I inspected every single valve and it all looks normal, so I'm completely stumped.

If anyone has any other suggestions, please speak up. If I can't figure this out by Saturday morning, I'm going to drop $200 in gaskets and I'm going to rip the rear head off.

Front paging it....

Going to try Gray Haze's suggestion, but if it all checks out, I'm draining all fluids and tearing this sucker apart on Saturday.

If anyone has any ideas, let me know soon...I'm all out on what the heck this could be.
