is it the 4.6 out of the post millenium/facelift cobra? if so its a SOLID powerplant that handles quite a bit of power in stock form. The got nick named the "Terminator" for a reason.....
As noted above though, as far as domestic v8's go, its one of the more complex. They respond well to mods, especially engine tunning and the basic NA engine stuff like cams, cylinder heads ect ect
The Corral read there forums. great mustang/ford V8 info.

The crown Vic platform boring one. Id like to build a police car.
I realized Ive been a member of crownvic.net since 2006 lol
Currently looking at one that has some engine mods. The bottom ends of the 4.6 - are they all the same?
Not for the Cobra 4v in the 03-04 SVT Supercharged; that is a completely different animal. As for the 2v and 3v? In a Mustang they are, and likely the same in the CV as the 5.0 in the Mustangs and Lincoln Mark VII were the same each year. A Crown Vic with engine mods? Couldn't be too extensive, the slushboxes in those [transmissions] are total shit. What year CV? I always thought about swapping one to manual and doing something similar, it has been done and I really dig it.
I'm not sure what your ultimate plans are, but I wouldn't swap the 2V you're going to get in favor of the 3V, and unless your power goal is insane? You won't need the 4V. Stick with the 2V. Tons of aftermarket support, and you could make solid good RWHP on a budget.

I totally missed this post before; How is it complex? It's a 2V SOHC engine. It makes working on a 3000GT look like a lego project. The best bang-for-buck out there is just dump an S trim Supercharger on it with a smaller pulley, but bolt ons and cams with tuning work just the same. The rotating assemblies eat lunch at 400+whp, but the blocks are good for a lot more. I miss working on these, they are tons of fun!
Well I'm not looking for anything crazy. The p71 Ive spent a lot of time in is slow as hell but I do like the platform for beating the hell out of and doing some offroad (NYC or otherwise lol)
I'd be happy to hit 300hp at the crank. more interested in reliability and still OK gas mileage.
Need a big car that can haul ass.
In the last 24 hours ive done some research and found what I think is a great deal.
2005 p71
cams, headers, some transmission mod, other mods i dont know anything about but people in the forum seem to do a lot.
Price $2700
the car has a bad miss or two the guy says. I just fixed a p71 yesterday that had a bad miss, replaced 2 coils and it was back to 100%.
If it needs a whole engine, it might end up being way more project than I want...
