Default Door open - sensor? malfunction?

Hi,
Sometimes my car wont detect when my doors are opened; Its completely random, the dome lights will come on but the step lights do not. The open door symbol in the dash doesn't light up either. What electrical part is the culprit here?

I really wanna get this fixed,
Thanks

Its the door trigger switch. Located in the door jamb towards the rear of the car. Its sometimes under a rubber boot so its harder to see. You can clean the contacts sometimes instead of replacing it.

And squirt a little WD40 type oil in it. Sometimes they just stick in the "closed" position.

Had a similar problem, had to bend one of the contacts just a little bit. Be careful if you do, it seemed a little brittle. Touched some fine sandpaper to the contacts to clean them up and haven't had a problem since.

I don't understand what a door jamb is -so the switch isn't in the door itself?
Is it by the rear speakers? inside that interior panel?

thanks

no its on the frame under the information placard. Its like the last part of the car that the door hits when it closes. Its a rubber button.

Below the latch just above the side skirt. Either replace it or try to clean the contacts on it.

Default Re: Door open - sensor? malfunction?

just fixed this 2 weeks ago on my 95 stealth.

Open the drivers door. near the rear of the car on the BODY section you cant see with the door closed. where the striker is that the door closes on. there is a rubber boot looking thing. near where you would see the tire stickers and body vin number stickers.

It is screwed in on mmine. phillips head. rubber boot. about 1 inch by 1 inch.

Unscrew it and pull it out some.
Fish the wire out some and unclip the plastic/rubber door thing from the connector.
DO NOT LET THE CONNECTOR AND WIRE FALL BACK INTO THE HOLE/DOOR JAM. just wrap some tape or bend it sharply or zip tie so it wont fall back in.

the rubber boot/ cover just slides over so just unslide it off the metal switch.

the switch has 2 little clips holding it together. this is on the plastic sides near where the connecor connects. pry them apart.
The whole thing comes apart at this point and there are springs so go easy and do this where parts can fly or fall and NOT GET LOST.

on all the metal contact surfaces spray some carb cleaner on them. then take a pencil with an eraser and rub on the metal contact points. or FINE sand papaer..

spray a small mist of WB40 in the connectors and plop the spring back in and reclip the switch back together. take it back over to the car and slide the original rubber boot back over it.

Reconnect the clip/harness. and bolt it back down to try the rebuilt switch out.
Now do the other side.

Seems as if moisture gets in the switch and corrods the copper connections like the inside of an off VCR remote. Cleaning the contacts fixes the open circut and allows your lights to work just like new.

Have a good day.

* edit: and all this great tech from a guy with bad karma.. boo.
