I wrote them some hate mail.

Regardless of the amount of money BMW pays you to print these fabricated tales of their latest industry thwomping (as you have been at least since 1998 when you placed the E36 BMW M3 above the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4, Toyota Supra Turbo, and Chevy C5 Corvette simply because it "got the most votes"), it is surely not worth the lack of sleep you must get while tossing and turning from the nightmares of Automotive Enthusiast misguidance, falsification, and betrayal.

The fact that you include such elements in your rubric as "Gotta Have It" (or "audacity" as you may remember it from 1998) and "Fun To Drive" leads me to believe that you in fact ARE Mr. Drives-A-Minivan or Ms. Sassy-Single, and you have NO idea who Mr. or Ms. Drives-Competitively-On-The-Weekends-And-Wants-A-Critical-Comparison-of-Supercars. The subjective nature in general of most of the criteria in the rubric makes the entire comparison flawed from the start - you know as well as I do that what you may think handles like an ice cream truck, I not only think is as nimble as Bill Clinton on the hotseat but will also drive circles around you in anything else. Do you honestly think anyone will pick up the M3 over the performance benchmark 911 Turbo, or over the Godzilla sent from Japan to destroy it?

If your intent is to satisfy the waiting room or toilet seat jitters with some useless jibber jabber about how much Mr. Vane-60-year-old-with-too-much-money HAS to have the latest BMW off the boat from Bavaria, then PLEASE adapt a much more fitting title - such as Transportation and Passenger. Leave the Cars and Driving to the people with a vested interest in the concept.

Sincerely,

Ryan Lawlis

^^ Well put Ryan. C&D has been blasted so much about being on BMW's payroll that they even joke about it in their own articles now. Excellent credibility. What's even more funny is that in this same issue they tout the return of the Bullitt and Challenger, both cars they test in their original incarnations. No WONDER they like BMWs so much, because their hemorrhoids can't take the other cars!

I heard back in the day they did a comparison between the BMW 318ti and a Mercedes Benz CLK GTR and the BMW won because it got better gas mileage.

Let's not forget, the new M3 has a 4 door option for the Mr. Drives-a-Minivan and Ms. Sassy-Single so they can take their friends out to the country club and arrive in "style." Personally, sports cars don't have 4 doors in my mind; granted, there are the EVOs and STis out there which are very competitive cars but they're not sports cars in my mind; I just love the coupe too much.

For 15 yrs C&D has called the M3 the "holy grail" of sports cars. I dont think anything will ever change there minds on that. For yrs it has been in tests were it gets trounced by every car in the test and thy still like it better, all the way back to the C4 corvette days. To each his own....
