I am in the middle of purchasing a 1995 3000GT with 85K, 5speed. The car is pearl white and the exterior is completly mint. Interior has a few minor flaws but overall a very very nice car. The car is an hour and a half away, I went test drove the car, agreed on a price(close to book value) and made a deposit on the car. Plan was to pickup the car this weekend. Today i got a phone call saying that upon further inspection, the title is branded with a "Exceeds Mechanical Limit" across the top of the title. Now the seller has been completly up front with everything on the car. They paid for a carfax and showed it to me. They will also be going to the DMV and paying for a title search to figure this out. I can not be happier with the actions taken by the seller. They are being more fair than most people would be. Now my question is Why would the car have a branded title? It was branded back in 2000 with only 17K on it. We think it was just a clerical error, which would make sense. But being that it has a branded title in reality it would not hold its book value would it? Our other question is would it be possible to unbrand the title? The "Exceeds Mechanical Limit" is applied when a 5 digit odometer rolls to 100K. Now we all know that the 3000GT has a 5 digit odometer which also raises my eye brow. Do i continue on with my purchase as if its a clerical error? There is no wat the car has 1,000,000 miles on it. Aside from the little interior things it is one of the nicest 3000gt's i've seen.
I would just like some input from fellow 3/S owners. I would not like to disclose the price paid but it is close to book value in good condition. |

Probably a carfax error, according to them my car is stolen right now...
Another person who was looking into buying my car a few years back also had a carfax saying it was a rebuild car. I had a carfax in hand saying it was 100% clean. Also, my last 93 was in a wreck, not a major one, but an accident none the less, never showed up on the carfax to this day. this was 4 years ago or more. I take carfax with a grain of salt personally. Jason

in ny if somebody checks the wrong box about the mileage on the back of the title it will say "not the actual milage" which is the same as exceeds mechanical limits. there is nothing you can do to correct that title. (at least in ny). i would walk away from the deal unless they drop the price at least by 25-30%.

This happened to me once and the rules differ by state. For me the lady at the DMV questioned it so maybe it was easier because she did not enter it in the system.
But I still had to have the seller redo the title, fill out some forms, notorize them, and send to the dmv. Then I had to do some shit to a pay fees for all kinds of little shit. All told it took me a month and five trips to the DMV but it was corrected. With that said if you cant get the title fixed the car is worth 1/2 what you are paying Quote:

It's an N/A, they never got the 6-speed, only the 94+ TT models.
![]() Back to the topic, it appears someone misfiled the title paper work. May have not had an odometer statement so just threw in "miles unknown" or in this case "exceeded mechanical blah blah blah". Seems as though the seller is confident this is incorrect if they're going to these measures. However, if you ever sell the car this will be hard as hell to explain away if you can't get it removed(which I highly doubt you or the seller will be able to). Whether it's true or not, it does materially affect the value. Something to think about... Jeremy |

I did some research myself by calling the VT DMV and also the CT DMV we are all certain that its a clerical error. CT DMV said there is no way to have this removed off the title as it was trasfered from out of state already branded. Now I get conflickting reports as to how much this really effects the value of the car. 25% 30% 50% is there any where that has hard evidence stating the actual percent the value is effected?
