We have a declaration on our Alaska titles and sometimes that box is checked in error... unfortunatley that information is forwarded to carfax... it may have been a situation like that...
That declaration does effect the resale value of the vehicle as the mileage is branded as unknown... but once it goes into that status, it cannot be changed back to a regular mileage statement. Basically, you got hosed by last dude

In Texas it would be a simple matter of paying for a title search and having the the title corrected. But here at 10 years old a car's title reads exempt so the "branded" designation would not show up on the title anymore anyway. You may be surprised what the title search digs up.

Lol...cars are "exempt" from reporting mileage after they are 8-10 years old anyway. It might affect your resale value if you had an extremely low mileage car that was mileage exempt because you couldn't prove the low miles on the odo were accurate, but other than that situation it's going to have approximately a 0% impact on your resale value.
All that means is that at some point in time, somebody didn't fill out the mileage on the back of the title when it was sold/registered. It could also mean a number of other things but that's not something that would even catch my attention if I was looking at buying a car. A branded title is generally considered "previous non-highway" or "salvage" or "rebuilt" but in most states, ALL cars over 10 years of age will carry some form of the label mileage exempt or TMU or exceeds mechanical limits regardless of whether there have ever been any issues reporting the mileage or not.

Yeah, I know here in Tn after the car is so old, the mileage isn't reported on the title anymore. The 3000gt I bought had 224,000 miles on it (which raises the question of why does yours only have 5 spots? I thought they all had 6, especially from the many pictures of odometers I've seen here on the forums) doesn't have the mileage written anywhere on the title, nor does it say exempt or anything else. It just looks like a normal title with no mileage written in on it.

how would you get that error if your car has a 6-digit odometer? unless they changed the odo to 5-digits later...which i highly doubt
