Default Automatic transmission for VR4

Okay, so I was looking to do a TT/AWD conversion on an N/A, but got talked out of it. There are a few TTs I'm looking at right now (higher mileage than I would want, but whatever).

So I need to get a JDM awd automatic transmission and swap it with the manual right? Which exact model do I need and are there any other parts I would need?

Also is it a big insurance jump from N/A to TT?

Depending on the years, you will probably need different rear differential. You will probably want to get an aftermarket transmission cooler as well. I don't think insurance is that drastically different, but I am not certain.

It all depends on your age.....if your young the difference WILL be substantial.

It was cheaper for me to insure my TT than it was my RT (both 92's) with the same coverage/usage. The insurance lady said it had to do with the AWD being a passive safety device.

Talk to AudibleSilence, or maybe he will see this and post up...

I would love to do this conversion and add a trans-brake, for a bracket racing car... But the boss lady says I can't mod the Z06 and build the stealth too.

As for the insurance, when I started looking for a 3/S when I was 17 my insurance company said the prices would be the same for n/a or tt.

Looking at a 94, 96, and 97 (probably not).

Where would be the best place to buy the JDM ATX/AWD transmission? And is there a specific model number?

Thanks for the help guys (and not calling me an idiot for wanting an auto, but I can't talk on the phone, eat, and look through papers at the same time while driving a manual).

Not sure on the model numbers, but just get one off of ebay. The AWD ATX trannies are dirt cheap.

If you are going to performance modify the car, you might want to consider adding torque converter from IPT while you install the tranny. A shift kit would be a good idea too, but it is easy to add that later.

Them's grounds for separation right there.

Just kidding.

I could have sworn that I made a AWD ATX TT thread or post on here. Hmmmm...Ah...bingo:

However, if you do this on a N/A your car is going to be slow as balls without doing a TT conversion as well. Our N/A's go 16's or so in auto FWD form. You are looking at 17-19 seconds after this conversion.

Here is a list of the things you will need (using a FWD ATX car):
  1. Trans - ($300-$400)
  2. 6spd TT rear end ( a 5spd rear end will not work) ($250-$400)
  3. Rear Subframe Mounts off of a Donor TT car (or fab your own) ($?)
  4. Drive Shaft (must be modified to accept both the awd trans @ the front and 6spd rear end in the back) ($?)
  5. Shift Kit ($85 from IPT)
  6. Tranny Cooler ($60-$175)
  7. Dedicated fan for tranny cooler ($?)

Here is a list of the things you will need (using an AWD/TT):
  1. Trans $300-$400
  2. TCU *Very Important!!!* THE TCU MUST MATCH THE ECU'S YEAR/OBD TYPE ($175)
  3. 6spd TT rear end ( a 5spd rear end will not work) ($250-$400)
  4. Drive Shaft must be modified to accept both the awd trans @ the front and 6spd rear end in the back (if you are using a 1st gen TT) ($)
  5. Shift Kit ($85 from IPT)
  6. Shifter Assembly ($?)
  7. Tranny Cooler ($60-$175)
  8. Dedicated fan for tranny cooler ($?)

You could sub the TCU for a Manumatic from IPT, but that is of course your choice. The prices with question marks are prices that vary from seller to seller. I paid $250 for my 6spd rear end, but I've seen them go for $500. You are realistically looking at $2,500 (w/ labor) for this conversion on a N/A and a little less (but not much). Yes I know 3sx converted the T4 into awd atx for a bit, but they also used their own version of a manumatic. Manumatic = no TCU worries/wiring.
