Arrow Anyone have problems with the 3rd Gen style lifters? or am i just lucky?

it appears that this was my recent problem with my car. Replaced all the lifters with 3rd gen style lifters. Primed all the lifters with oil before starting it. However, car never ran right not even for a second after that. A friend and I pulled off the rear valve cover to find, the lifter to be dry like it had not been squirting any oil, and the rocker had forced itself off the top of the lifter and scoured the cam lobe pretty bad. This really sucks! My car only has 72k on it now, and to have a problem like this while only trying to remove damn lifter tick is a shame. So it appears I will need a new rear head!

Money is somewhat of an issue right now, so if you were in my position, what would you do? Pictures to come.

what makes you say that? I've never had to do much engine work before, so I am looking for some help as to which route to go, what you think is damaged. If you could elaborate on why you think that, id appreciate it

If you just had some scoring on a cam then just replace the cam. You will have to retime your car but you prob not have to replace the whole head. Infact post pics of the cam, it may be fine as is.

Hmm... Are you 100% sure the rocker was CORRECTLY seated during installation? It's REALLY easy to fuck up the rockers on the rear bank if you're doing work in the car. I did something similar during a 120k a couple years back. After putting the cams back in, I forgot to REALLY check each rocker. Went to start the car and it required throttle just to start... I let it run for about 30 seconds, and pulled the rear cover to discover a slightly scarred cam lobe. The owner and I called it usable and it worked fine after popping the rocker into place.

The fact that you say the car never ran right for even 1 second after doing the swap makes me think the rocker was never properly seated.

It sucks that install-error created this much of a headache, but at least this will bring some closure to the situation

Good luck,

Post some pics of the score will you? You have to remember it isn't a rod or main bearing.

Our cams can tolerate some damage to the lobes without issue.

You should prime the lifters with diesel fuel, not oil.

Unless there is damage on the head where the CAM rides on you should at the most need a new CAM and no head.
