While staying at a hotel in Louisville, walked out to the car this morning to head in to the base and as I begin to open the driver's side door, I notice something peculiar. Its dark, raining on my fresh-pressed uniform, and the coffee hasnt quite hit me yet so the spectacle before me takes a bit to process. There is 2ft of wire hanging off the side of my car, protruding from the hatch... which I soon discover is closed, but not latched. This being not how I left my car the night before, I open the hatch to discover that my subwoofer and box are missing. From this vantage point, I can also see the explosion of wires that was once my head unit. I had a Wing staff briefing to give and was forced to drive to base without further inspection.
I can tell that they slid the driver's seat forward for access to the back seat... but decided to leave my $300 iPod that was laying back there. Apparently they were not familiar with how sound systems worked, and left my $500 amp sitting in the trunk. Fortunately, the head unit was a 5-year old Alpine that half the buttons had quit working last week and was due for replacement. The subwoofer was a substantial loss, as was the custom box. Fortunately I have a duplicate box, as well as another subwoofer (cheaper one from a previous car). Smart enough to get into my car w/o breaking anything, too dumb to take anything of value. What just irks me is the complete lack of respect for other people's property. To me, a thief is one of the lowest forms of life. /rant |

that sucks man, an alarm would be a good investment. Cost me like $400 for a good alarm system installed and i got like $250 off from my insurance per 6 months so it basically pays for itself...but that still sucks man..

That's a complete bummer. It seems like a lot of cars have been broken into lately on this board. I wonder if it is from an upswing in crime, or if it is just a result of a change in owner dempgraphics.
I'd definitely get that alarm installed before you start replacing your sound system components. I consider a good aftermarket car alarm to be an essential purchase for anyone with a decent stero or visible electronics.

The high end Viper alarms are pretty decent. You get a lot of additional features like remote start, turbo timing, valet mode, multi-stage motion sensors, etc. I'd say definitely stick with a major manufacturer over the cheap ebay alarms. I know others are decent, but besides for Viper/Clifford I really can't give a recommendation.

Yes. For example, you can add a battery backup, additional alarm horn, etc. A lot of it has to do with how you wire things up. You can add these additional security measures to most alarms, but you just need to plan out the wiring first.

If youre going after an alarm, get one with a paging feature. Most people ignore car alarms, and they are also pretty easy to quickly silence...so get one with paging features so YOU know when something happens to your car.
