Red face Finally?

Hi, I'm Ian. I have been looking for a first gen 3kgt for quite a while and so far none have been in my price range or just too far. Now, I have found a couple on CL and narrowed it down to one.

It is a 93' 3kgt Base model Black with Black/Red cloth seats and some other stuff. From what it sounds and looks like (pictures are very small) the car is in good condition with the exception of the transmission.

From our last conversation, the guy said that (basically) the car would start up and run but would not engage in drive. or, when it did it would cut out soon after. I don't remember exactly what he said, but it was somewhere along those lines.

Anyway, he said the problem could be fixed for about 400$. I said I'd offer him $1,000 for the car unfixed, which he agreed too. Then, much later in the conversation he stated that he took it to a local mechanic and got that estimate to have it fixed.

The only problem is I just realised what he posted on his selling ad:

"I have a 93 3000gt automatic very nice shape, but it does need a tranmission, which you can get rebuilt for 400$, this car books for 5300 in good shape. The body and interior is in great shape. My loss you gain, Just lost my job and need to sell it asap. Please call 321-696-XXXX or you can email me. Thanks for looking!"

Now I might know jack-$#!+ about cars, but I've learned everything about these beauts here on 3si.org, and I know you can't re-build a transmission for that price, am I wrong?

I believe he said he is going to take it into the shop today or Friday and will give me a follow-up call on that day. I'll try to be more descriptive in my questioning this time, but I'm not really sure what to specifically ask because of my novice mechanical knowledge.

so, any help is appreciated. thanks.
