I also tried to get the Bilstein front cartridges apart... a month ago... and I couldn't do it. I put two jam nuts on the threaded rod that protrudes out the bottom of the strut, and all that happened was I messed up the threads on the rod when the jam nut I was using to turn the rod started spinning in place.
I don't think that opening it up and cutting the internal bump stops is feasible at present- at least, not without a THIRD strut to cut apart first and find out what they're doing now to keep them together.
