Replacing the axle shouldn't mess with alignment if you do it right. rather than unbolting the strut to knuckle, undo the balljoint and tie rod end if necessary. That should hopefully be enough room to get the axle out. Good luck

Thanks.. the service manual says ball joint and tie rod only so I think you're right. Was hoping I wouldn't have to unbolt that strut!
Unrelated but quick question for anyone. I removed the crank pulley with the breaker bar propped on the frame while I hit the ignition a few times... now how do I tighten the crank pulley nut again without a tool?!
