It will install nicely either way but it is supposed to go on only one way. Inside this hose is a check valve (1-way valve)--you cannot tell by looking at the outside of it, but it is in there. Or, perhaps somewhere in the last 15 years someone decided to replace it with a piece of silicone hose or something and the check valve is long gone.
