Default 18 vs 19 vs 20" wheels

I am having a problem finding wheels and all-season tires for my 1997 VR-4. Unfortunately Chrome does not hold up well in this area (southern NJ) due to being so close to the salt water.

So I was looking at different wheels and the Toyo Proxis 4 tires (all season a necessity here), but am getting varying opinions from suppliers as to what diameter wheel to get.

I have 18" on there now and was thinking about upgrading to 19 or 20 to improve handling.

Is there a huge disadvantage of going up a size or two, as long as the profile is changed to keep the outside diameter close ?

Thanks
Tony
