It sounds like the clip on the end of the shaft is not engaged-meaning the shaft is not all the way in. Or maybe there is no clip on the axle, and the shaft is popping out?

It takes a good amount of force to slam the axle into the trans, are you sure they are in all the way?

At this point the splines might be messed up, and not allowing the shaft to couple with the trans.
