It looks like he originally had a white background/ border, and used the paint bucket tool to change it to black, and since the window sill was overlapping on it, it changed that color to black as well in all areas that were similar to the white of the background.
Alan, the dog shot is very well composed, though maybe a bit on the dark (underexposed) side.
The two 3/S shots, the backgrounds are a bit distracting, as there is quite a bit going on in them. Also, with the car shots, you need to watch the horizon, as yours seems to be a bit tilted. That can be fixed to some extent in PS or other programs however, so it's not that big of a deal.
The photo pf the Lotus is excellent composition wise, but a tad on the underexposed side.
