I have an ATX. Yes, some days it varies in tone (low to high like you said) while it idles from one second to the next…but it’s very inconsistent. I'm pretty sure it's the motor though since no noise comes from the passenger side where the trans is actually at.

Today, as an example, I started it up (morning temp’s around 20-30 degrees) and I had no ticking from initial startup all the way to work. I got off of work and there was still no ticking, but I noticed when I pulled up to my house the ticking was loud as hell.
