Re: My First Set with my new Xti
Just to add a little info for the new photogs.
UV filter = filters outlight in the ultraviolet range (of course)
The effect it has is in the daytime (not much use at night except with fluorescent lights, but a clear UV filter won't be detrimental). It will eliminate haze making the shots clearer. The effect is more pronounced for things further away (as UV is diffracted/reflected off atmospheric contaminants), so dirty air = more haze that the UV filter eliminates. BTW, contaminants also include moisture. That's why cloud shots will be much clearer with a UV filter.
Polarizing filter = polarizes light. Light waves off a radiant item (sun, bulb filament etc.) basically radiate at all angles. A linear polarizing filter eliminates light that is polarized at 90 degrees to the polarization of the filter.
For example, light reflecting off a flat horizontal surface (the surface of water, glare off the road etc.) is horizontally polarized. Attach a linear polarizer and orient it to polarize vertically and it will eliminate the horizontally polarized reflections. You can also orient to polarizer horizontally to eliminate reflections off a window for instance if shooting through a storefront display.
The polarizer also has an effect of increasing color saturation when shooting outside because it also reduces glare. If you look at a shot of the same daytime skyline with and without a polarizer, The polarized shot will have much more 'pop' and increased color saturation and contrast between the clouds and sky. A linear polarizer allows you to turn the polarizer to adjust the degree of it's effect. The polarizing effect on the sky in sunlight is also most prominent when you are shooting at 90 degrees to the sun. If the sun is directly behind you, the effect of the polarizer is much less.
A circular polarizer has a similar effect but works better with an auto camera's light metering system. Because it polarizes light differently to the linear polarizer though, it's effects can not be adjusted the way a linear polarizer can and it will not be quite as effective for eliminating polarized glare.
