Actually, I would think that the "worst thing" about E85 is that the production of it has raised food prices by 10% in the past year and it has contributed to raising taxes since the gov't takes our dollars and subsidizes the Iowa corn producers and the E85 refinery process; a losing venture since day One, costing tax payers billions.
But getting back to the issue: A water/meth system that uses 25% meth when under mid to high boost is much more efficient at lowering AIT's and cylinder temps, allowing a few extra degrees of timing without Knock at higher rpms and loads. The water/meth injection is best used for cooling the combustion charge and thus allowing slightly leaner AFR mixtures for better power without raising the potential for Knock. Re: cleaning with water/meth injection, brief jaunts into the injection spray time ( under high boost) cleans and keeps clean the intake valves and combustion deposits on the pistons are less likely to build up for which if they do, will only cause hot spots leading to Knock and/or the most feared pre-ignition potential.
Meth/water injection though isn't used to raise the octane per se but it does have the effect of lowering the volatility of the fuel so Knock potential when compared to 93 octane gasoline is reduced at higher cylinder temps.
I tried E85 in my stupid useless flex fuel Ford F-150 V8 and mileage went from 19 mpg to 13 mpg and oh boy_ I saved 10 cents a gallon for E85 on that loss of mileage? Bah_
Best idea: Take Al Gore's Nobel prize award away because his goofy movie was a predicated hoax, take his fuel hogging jet away, and wake people up to the fact that man made global warming is a myth designed to bolster special interest groups to profit off of people's fears, and we wouldn't have to discuss E85

Ok_ any Iowa farmers can now feel free to flame away.
