A couple of things to consider. Are they equal rebuilds? Usually the lower price would be for a rebuild that just replaces what is worn or broken, where a higher price would be a complete replacement of all bearings and seals. You need to ask what are you getting? What do you want? A complete rebuild or just get it back working?
Also consider that someone repairing in their garage can offer a lower price as they don't have the overhead or carry the liability insurance a shop would. However, if something goes wrong with the rebuild and the trans has to be pulled, will the guy in the garage stand behind his work?
