Yea, -10 degrees fahrenheit is getting on the cold side! Been there many times. By the end of January, we get kinda used to it and its just like... meh, its cold outside again. Oh well.
Just use the gear oil Mitsubishi recommends. But I'd be tempted to try 15W40 engine oil in cold climates. Mine goes into 2nd with a Ca-chunk when it is cold and when it warms up after a few miles, its fine. Automatic transmission fluid may work quite well, since the synchronizers use a friction material similar to what automatic transmissions use in their clutch packs. Maybe it is hard on the VCU? I dunno.
