you can move the fork back and forth a ton if the slave isn't hooked up. There must be one inch of movement before it hits the pressure plate inside.

You should be able to move the fork and hear it hit the pressure plate fingers. If you don't hear this and the fork hits the transmission case then you do have a tob problem.
