I got this forum link from the General forum. I am helping my son with his VR-4. Can you reccommend a tuner for him? We have heard of Polk Performance in Benton. Advice?

New VR-4 Owner Needs Advice (Long Post -Sorry)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Everyone,

I am posting for my son. My experience is with Corvettes so I can't be sure when he is getting taken and when not.

This is my first VR-4 replated post and I need to explain what has happened to date so that you guys can hopefully get us going in the right direction.

In June my 20 year old way-to-excited- son purchased a one-owner 1992 3000GT VR-4 for $5K. The milage is 79,230. The interior is very nice and the exterior is good with a few blemishes (but not as nice as many I have seen here on this forum). The owner was a retired female lawyer. She financed the loan at 0% interest after $1K down.

My son could not drive a stick so I went with him to drive it back. When I started the car it smoked (blue) very badly all the time. On the way home he drive my vette and I drove his car. If he got more that 30 yard behind me I could not even see him.

The car sat all summer and he just recently had it repaird at a Volvo shop owned by his best friend's mom. They removed the turbos and sent them off for repair, replaced the plugs, cleaned the tubes (turbo feed or something???) removed the front bumper to remove the intercoolers, sent the intercoolers off to be flushed and then put it all back together.

This cost just under $3,000. She wanted my son to replace the intercoolers (and won't warranty the turbo install since he did not) but that was going to be another $1,200 so we did not. I could never find a posting here that indicated that IC replacement was necessary.

The car does not smoke now and he sees the boost gage seems to work now.

Does this sound expensive? I could have had a head/cam/long tube header upgrade on my vette for this much.

She showed a photo looking into his cat and there is so much oil build up in it that there is only an inch to 1.5 inches at most open. We don't have vehicle inspection so he does not have to worry about that but can the car run without the cat? Will it throw codes related to the 02 sensors if the cat is removed?

Now that he has it running can you give us some advice as to what we should watch out for or special servicing to take care of?

TIA
