Well If you have a monster sized gear puller you could reach more then 1st gear but a press will make life so much easier. I originally tried to do mine with just a gear puller that I rented from auto zone. It was too small to do the job effectively and I ended up finding a press. You should be able to find a press at most auto/machine shops and It shouldn't cost that much if anything just to have em pressed off.
