Hello ATX-ers!

I desperately need advise! My brother owns a 1996 3000GT with an ATX, (130,000 miles).

He was steadily cruising on the highway at 70 when he suddenly heard the evil sound of gears grinding...suddenly he lost all acceleration. The engine is running fine although the transmission is not engaging in drive or reverse...there is an odd sound of something grinding.

I had the car towed to a trusted and respected transmission shop. This shop works on domestics and imports and has done quality work for my friends in the past. This shop has been around for 20 years.

The shop owner just called to inform me that the transmisison is blown and needs to be re-built including a new torque converter. He quoted me a price of $1,800 to $1,900 including a 2 year warranty.

My questions are as follows:

1. Is $1,800 to $1,900 a fair price?

2. Should I locate a used transmission and have it installed? (If so, is there a well known and trusted source?

3. Is there any good transmission modifications that should be performed while the rebuild is taking place? (My brothers car is stock and he is more interested in reliability rather than performance).

4. Any miscellaneous advise would be appreciated...is there anything else I should know?
