Well, I guess this article will shut me up. I was always under the impression that tuning timing cannot add significant horsepower because it simply controls the timing of the flame front, and in turn keeps pre-ignition in check. But clearly it does act to make horsepower. It makes a lot of sense that at piston-speeds, the propogation of the flame lags behind the speed of the piston, thus making for dynamic pressure differences (displacement occuring with the second differential of time). These lead to deviations from the ideal gas law, and in turn differential burn rates. It is all extremely enlightening... I guess some people might have already known this, but to me it was like seeing the light again. If anything, the clarification between pre-ignition and detonation was worth the read.
