Default Re: Transfer Case Recall - IMPORTANT, Pleas Read!!!!

Some advice please - I have 170K miles on a 92 TT, and last Friday the splines on the outputshaft from the tranny to the transfer case stripped. The local Dodge dealer is doing the transfer case recall (thanks to the web site for the info - wish I had read it before), but have called and said that these splines had rusted out, were not part of the recall, the shaft could not be replaced seperately anymore, and I would require a refurbed tranny fot $5k plus labor.

Comments on what has been covered in the past by Dodge/Mitsu would be greatly appreciated.

This dealer is the one that did the under 100K warrenty work, and said had I continued to maintain it at his shop, they would have noted the recall notice via the vn number, and would have checked the fluids. He didn't inform me of the recall, of course. I have not replied to the dealer yet, but my line of reasoning would be that I change the oil every 3K miles religiously, had I known about the recall from the dealer I would have had it done, or at a minimum had the transfer case every time it was up for an oil change. BTW, the tranfer case itself had rust in it. I originally had it towed the the folks that do the maint on all my three cars, they took it apart, commented on the rust in the tc.

Since the splines rusted out, it was because of the lack of oil in the transfer case, and should be covered by the recall. Is this realistic?
